Every day, River Valley Resources HR Manager Lisa Farris walks to work. Along the way, she often saw Richard, a 66-year-old man facing enormous challenges—physical limitations, a recent criminal charge, and the uphill battle of finding a job. One day, Lisa stopped and talked with him. That conversation changed everything.
As they walked together, Richard shared his story and his determination to keep going despite the obstacles. Lisa, moved by his perseverance, told him about RVR’s new Senior Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP), which helps older adults re-enter the workforce. Richard didn’t hesitate—he called immediately.
Not long after, RVR needed a janitor for the Clearinghouse. Through SCSEP, Richard was trained and hired. Today, “Rick,” as we now call him, works every day with pride, keeping the building spotless and welcoming. Tenants constantly notice the difference—and so do we.
Rick’s journey has been anything but easy, but his story proves that second chances are real. With Lisa’s compassion and Rick’s determination, a chance encounter on the sidewalk became a powerful reminder: no matter how tough the road, hope and hard work can lead to something extraordinary.
